Go Tri Event Report 23rd April 2017

Castle Tri hosted our 5th Go Tri event on 23rd April 2017 at Prudhoe Waterworld, which was another tremendous success.

Sixty-four Go Tri athletes assembled to take part on a chilly but sunny Sunday morning in Prudhoe. For most, this would be their first taste of triathlon: Go Tri events are aimed at newcomers and Castle Tri do all we can to make the atmosphere welcoming, relaxed, friendly and fun. As ever, the event attracted a diverse group of entrants, from teenagers to sixty-somethings. The challenge of completing your first triathlon should not be underestimated and Castle Tri is extremely proud of everyone who enters these events. It is a real privilege to help so many people become triathletes! Special mention goes to the graduates from Castle Tri’s Couch to 5k programme who added swimming and cycling to their running skills. Well done everyone!

The Go Tri course followed the same format as our previous events. Athletes started with a 200m swim which is designed to mimic open water conditions as much as is possible in the pool. Swimmers started in small ‘waves’ of around five people, entering the water in the shallow beach area and completing two laps around an inflatable buoy.

The Go Tri athletes negotiated transition between the swim and bike in the Waterworld car park, swapping swimming goggles for helmets and shoes, and pulling on some layers to keep the chill at bay before heading out on the one-lap 9km bike course. Marshals stationed around the bike route were on hand to provide mechanical support, advice and of course enthusiastic encouragement! It is impossible to avoid hills when riding in Prudhoe, and Hammerite Hill provided the biggest test of the day.

With that challenge safely negotiated, the riders returned to the transition area to rack their bikes, and head out on the undulating, three-lap, 2.4km run. All 64 entrants completed the full course, which is a fantastic result. The atmosphere back at Waterworld was superb, with supporters and volunteers loudly cheering all the runners over the line to receive their T-shirts and goody bags.

We hope that the event has inspired some local people to consider entering their first sprint distance (or even longer!) triathlon, or given a bit of race-day confidence to those already planning to tackle a race for the first time this year.

If you would like to take your first steps into the world of Triathlon, Castle Tri would love to welcome you to our next Go Tri planned for September 2017. Details of how to enter will be available soon so keep an eye on the events web page and our Facebook page.

Massive thanks go to:

·         Gav Appleby, Castle Tri Events Officer, who works tirelessly to organise these fantastic events;

·         One Life Racing in Hexham for providing the bike racking, which makes the transition area look and feel just like a ‘big race’ set up.

·         Richard Roberts, Castle Tri member, for providing the transition cones

·         All our volunteers and marshals for giving up their time and providing support and encouragement, we know that this makes all the difference to the participants;

·         And, of course, everyone who entered or came and supported their friends and family – these events are all about you and we hope to see some of you soon at our club training sessions!

Some Facebook feedback from people who took part:

“Huge thanks to all involved in organising and running this. Had a fab time this morning. Faultless organisation and support from marshals and brilliant goody bag and t-shirt to take home.”

“Thanks to everyone at Castle Tri for organizing a great event! Thoroughly enjoyed it and fantastic volunteers along the course!”

“Amazing experience this morning, very well organised. Marshals were great and certainly plenty of encouragement each one unique and supportive. The goody bag and T-shirt erased the memory of that hill! Thanks everyone.”
